LINCOLN

When Jayda’s dad returns from his Anchorage trip, I have to admit I’m a little bummed. But I wouldn’t want her to miss a birthday dinner with her father for my own selfish reasons. If I can sneak her out of her room tonight, great.

If not, well, I’m not ready to give up on her yet.

“Hand me that filter,” I say to Reed, extending a hand under the tail of the plane in waiting.

“You fucked her, didn’t you?” he asks half a second after handing over the filter I need to change.

None of my brothers are exactly known for holding back when they have a strong opinion about how one of us might be fucking up our lives, but Reed has always come down on me harder than anyone. “What’s it matter?” I ask, avoiding the question. But he wouldn’t ask if he wasn’t already ninety-eight percent certain of the answer. Reed’s calculated like that. The smartest of us all.

“You know why it matters.”

My brothers and I agreed early on that sleeping with clients was ill-advised at best. I never had a problem sticking to that until now. “She’s not just some fling.” At least, I don’t want her to be.

“Tell me how this story ends.”

Well shit. I don’t have a great answer for that. Because what I want—a wife living in my cabin with a half dozen kids—is not realistic. “She loves Alaska. Wants to work in wildlife conservation.” I damn near drop the filter into the engine compartment but catch it at the last second. This is an easy maintenance procedure. Reed’s raised eyebrow calls me out for it.

“So you’re going to marry her and move her up here?” The tone of his voice challenges his very statement.

“She’s already got a job. In Costa Rica. One her daddy secured for her.”

“You met him yet?”

“Nope.” I focus on placing the filter and wrenching the bolts back into place before I go on. “He’s been absent a lot. Just got back tonight.”

“Sure he’d love to know you boned his daughter on a mountain top.”

I turn and face Reed. “Do you have cameras on this plane I need to know about?”

“You did fuck her.” Reed shakes his head, not a hint of a smile on his lips. He’s much too serious these days. But he gets it, just like me. Broken hearts and betrayal suck ass. We’ve both been the punch line of that joke. All it takes it one really good punch.

“It was her birthday.”

Reed lets out an incredulous laugh. “Is that what you’re going to tell her billionaire dad?”

With my head launched so high in the clouds, I never gave much thought to meeting her father. But I suppose if I want to marry Jayda, the right thing to do is ask for her hand. I don’t think he’ll take it well.

“You’re figuring it out right now, aren’t you?” Reed folds his arms over his chest, and it makes him look twice his size. He can be an intimidating son of a bitch when he wants to be.
